Accident – Death – Obituary News : PAXTON — The prosecutor in Ford County has chosen to drop criminal charges against a teenager from Rantoul in connection with the shooting of a 19-year-old woman from Danville in Paxton last February.

According to records from Ford County Circuit Court, State’s Attorney Andrew Killian decided to dismiss the case against 18-year-old Daniel E. Hoffman during a pretrial hearing held on January 2. The charges against Hoffman included aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, which is classified as a Class X felony. If convicted, Hoffman could have faced a prison sentence ranging from six to 30 years. At the time of the incident, Hoffman was 17 and was charged as an adult.

Killian’s decision to drop the charges came after it was discovered that several witnesses’ recollections of the events that took place on the night of the shooting had changed from their initial statements given to law enforcement during the investigation. This change in witness testimony complicated Killian’s efforts to proceed with Hoffman’s trial. In a statement made on July 19, Killian stated, “During preparation of the case for trial, it became clear that several witnesses’ recollections of the events that night had shifted from the original statements provided to law enforcement during the investigation. I am reviewing the case with law enforcement to determine our next steps.”

Killian did not respond immediately to a request for comment from the Ford County Chronicle regarding his decision to dismiss the case. However, it was revealed that Killian had indicated last summer that some witnesses had altered their stories, leading to the dismissal of the charges against Hoffman.

To provide some context, the incident occurred on February 18 when Yezenia Tucker-Lloyd, then 19 years old, was shot in the head while riding in the passenger seat of a vehicle passing by a house on North American Street in Paxton. The investigation conducted by Paxton police identified Hoffman as the person responsible for the shooting. Police Captain Robert Yates testified during a preliminary hearing on March 7, stating that based on witness statements and other evidence, it appeared that Tucker-Lloyd was an unintended victim rather than the intended target. Fortunately, Tucker-Lloyd survived the incident.

Following the preliminary hearing, Hoffman was released from the custody of the McLean County Juvenile Detention Center to ensure that his speedy trial rights were not violated and to preserve the case for potential prosecution in the future.

Hoffman was represented by public defender Harvey Welch throughout the legal proceedings.

This recent development marks a significant turning point in the case, as the charges against Hoffman have been dropped. It remains to be seen what further actions will be taken by the State’s Attorney’s office and law enforcement regarding the investigation into the shooting incident. The dismissal of the charges highlights the importance of thorough investigations and reliable witness testimonies in criminal cases..
