Namakkal Man Arrested for Shooting Father-in-Law Over Land Dispute

Namakkal: A 37-year-old man was apprehended by the police on Thursday for shooting his father-in-law following a heated argument over a land dispute. The incident took place in Namagiripettai, and the accused has been identified as N Soundarrajan from Vazhapadi in Salem district. The victim, K Vellaiyan, is a 60-year-old farmer from Kedamalai near Rasipuram.

Vellaiyan, who was unmarried, had adopted his elder brother’s daughter, Kuppayi, who is now 32 years old. Kuppayi got married to Soundarrajan a few years ago. The land dispute arose when Vellaiyan discovered that Soundarrajan had recently paid off a mortgage on four cents of land without informing him.

When Vellaiyan confronted Soundarrajan about this, a heated argument ensued. The argument escalated on Thursday, leading to Soundarrajan shooting Vellaiyan in the chest with a country-made gun. Vellaiyan was immediately rushed to the government medical college hospital in Salem, where doctors performed surgery to remove the pellets. Fortunately, Vellaiyan’s condition is now stable.

The police wasted no time in arresting Soundarrajan and have lodged him at the Salem central prison. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to gather more evidence and determine the motive behind the shooting.

This incident highlights the importance of resolving land disputes through peaceful means and legal channels. It serves as a reminder that resorting to violence can have severe consequences and lead to the loss of innocent lives.
