Perry, Iowa – On the first day back to school after the winter break, a 17-year-old student opened fire at a small-town high school in Perry, Iowa. The horrifying incident resulted in the death of a sixth-grader and left five others wounded. As the chaos unfolded, students sought refuge in offices and classrooms, fleeing in panic.

The suspected shooter, identified as Dylan Butler, died from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to an official from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Among the wounded was Perry High School Principal, Dan Marburger, who was later identified by an eastern Iowa school district where he had graduated from high school.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the shooting. However, two friends and their mother, who spoke with The Associated Press, revealed that Butler had been a quiet person who had endured years of bullying. They claimed that the bullying had escalated recently when Butler’s younger sister started to be targeted as well. The friends further expressed their frustration with the school’s lack of intervention, stating that it was “the last straw” for Butler.

The tragic incident took place in Perry, a town with approximately 8,000 residents located about 40 miles (65 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines. Perry is situated on the outskirts of the state capital’s metropolitan area and is known for its large pork-processing plant. The town is characterized by low-slung, single-story homes nestled among leafless winter trees. Perry High School and the middle school are connected and situated on the eastern edge of the town.

Authorities reported that the shooter was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. During the investigation, authorities also discovered a “pretty rudimentary” improvised explosive device, which was rendered safe. The motive behind the shooting is currently under investigation, with authorities examining “a number of social media posts” made by the suspect around the time of the incident.

Witnesses and survivors of the shooting have shared their harrowing experiences. Sisters Yesenia Roeder and Khamya Hall, both 17, along with their mother, Alita, revealed that Butler had been relentlessly bullied since elementary school. The bullying intensified recently when his younger sister became a target as well. The family stated that the school officials did not intervene, leading to Butler’s breaking point.

Perry High School senior, Ava Augustus, recounted the terrifying moments when she heard three gunshots while waiting in a school office for a counselor. Unable to escape through a small window, she and others barricaded the door, prepared to defend themselves if necessary. Eventually, they received confirmation that the shooter was no longer a threat, and they were able to leave. Glass shards littered the floor, and Augustus witnessed a girl being carried out of the auditorium with a gunshot wound to her leg.

Three gunshot victims were taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Centre in Des Moines, where one remains in critical condition. The other victims are reported to be in stable condition. The community came together for a vigil in a local park to mourn the loss and show support for those affected by the tragedy. In response to the incident, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in the state to be lowered to half-staff.

The shooting in Perry occurred against the backdrop of Iowa’s upcoming first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses. GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy had a campaign event scheduled in Perry, which was canceled to hold a prayer and intimate discussion with local residents. The incident has reignited the debate on gun control, with gun safety advocates calling for stricter laws. However, such proposals face opposition from many Republicans, particularly in rural, GOP-leaning states like Iowa.

Iowa’s current gun laws do not require a permit to purchase a handgun or carry a firearm in public, although a background check is necessary when buying a handgun without a permit.

The Perry Community School District, which includes the high school where the shooting took place, has approximately 1,785 students. The town of Perry is more diverse than the overall state of Iowa, with around 31% of residents identifying as Hispanic compared to less than 7% statewide. Census data also indicates that nearly 19% of the town’s residents were born outside of the United States.

Law enforcement responded swiftly to the active shooter report, arriving at the scene within minutes. Emergency vehicles surrounded the school complex, and officers quickly located the suspected shooter, who had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of a young life and rallies together to support the victims and their families. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the underlying issues contributing to such incidents of violence in schools.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those affected by this senseless act of violence.
