10-Year-Old California Boy Will Not Face Charges in Fatal Shooting Incident

The Sacramento District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that a 10-year-old boy from California, who was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting, will not be charged. The incident occurred when the boy allegedly used a stolen gun, which he had found in his father’s car. The father, Arkete Davis, 53, has been charged with several offenses, including criminal storage of a firearm, child endangerment, and felon in possession of a firearm. The District Attorney’s Office has stated that the sole responsibility for the child’s tragic death lies with Davis.

According to authorities, Davis was legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm, and the gun used in the incident had been reported stolen back in 2017. CNN had previously reported this information. Meanwhile, Davis’ son was being held in the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility. However, he has since been released and is now with his mother in Sacramento, as confirmed by his grandmother in an interview with CNN affiliate KCRA.

The victim of the shooting, a 10-year-old boy named Keith Frierson, was found by deputies bleeding from his head and neck in a parking lot. Law enforcement officers had responded to a call reporting the shooting on a Saturday afternoon. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the young boy was later pronounced dead. Shockingly, Keith Frierson is one of over 1,600 children and teenagers who lost their lives due to gun violence in the year 2023, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.

During their investigation, detectives discovered a gun in a nearby trash can, where it is believed that Davis had attempted to dispose of it. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this finding. Currently, Davis is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday for a bail review. It is worth noting that he has not yet been assigned an attorney, as confirmed by Sacramento County’s Conflict Criminal Defenders.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from improperly stored firearms and the urgent need for responsible gun ownership.
