10-Year-Old California Boy Not Charged in Fatal Shooting Case

A 10-year-old boy from California, who was arrested in connection with a tragic shooting incident resulting in the death of another boy, will not face charges, according to a statement released by the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office on Thursday.
The father of the young boy, Arkete Davis, aged 53, appeared in court on Wednesday and was charged with various offenses, including criminal storage of a firearm, two counts of child endangerment, and illegal possession of a firearm. The District Attorney’s office emphasized that the sole responsibility for the child’s death lies with the defendant.
Authorities have revealed that Davis was legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm, and the recovered weapon was reported stolen back in 2017, as previously reported by CNN.
The 10-year-old boy, who remains unnamed, was initially held at the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility. However, he has since been released and is now with his mother in Sacramento, confirmed by his grandmother in an interview with CNN affiliate KCRA.
The victim of the shooting incident, which occurred on Saturday, has been identified as Keith Frierson, also 10 years old.
According to deputies who responded to the shooting call, they discovered the injured child bleeding from his head and neck in a parking lot. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was later pronounced dead. Shockingly, his death is one of over 1,600 children and teenagers who lost their lives to gun violence in 2023, based on data from the Gun Violence Archive.
During the investigation, detectives found a discarded gun in a nearby trash can, which they believe Davis attempted to dispose of. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this finding.
Davis is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court for a bail review on Friday, as stated by the District Attorney’s office. At this point, he has not been assigned an attorney, according to Sacramento County’s Conflict Criminal Defenders.
