Perry, Iowa – A tragic shooting took place at Perry High School this morning, resulting in the death of a sixth-grade student and injuries to five others. The suspect, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time, when the Perry Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter at the high school. Officers arrived within minutes and immediately entered the school, where they discovered several individuals with gunshot wounds.

Law enforcement officers conducted a systematic search of the school and also found an improvised explosive device, which was later rendered safe by the State Fire Marshal and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. The school was secured, and no further threats were identified.

The victims, four of whom are students and one who is a school administrator, were provided with immediate medical assistance and transported to nearby hospitals. As of now, one victim is in critical condition but is expected to survive, while the other four are in stable condition.

Dylan Butler, the alleged shooter, was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Law enforcement officials have stated that all evidence suggests that Butler acted alone. However, the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Authorities have also mentioned that Butler made several social media posts around the time of the shooting, and those posts are currently being secured as evidence. They have not released any additional names or information about the victims at this time.

The response from local law enforcement, as well as state and federal agencies, was swift and coordinated. Approximately 150 officers from various agencies responded to the scene within an hour.

Governor Leigh expressed her condolences to the victims and their families and pledged the full resources of the state government to assist in the response and community recovery from this tragedy.
