In a tragic incident this morning in Melaka, a man lost his life while two others sustained injuries after their motorcycles collided with a pit on Jalan Bukit Katil.

The deceased has been identified as Haiqal Iman Mohd Shahruddin Abdul Qayyum, aged 20. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured victims have been identified as Chong Min Yang, aged 57, and Mohd Zaim Bahrin, aged 31.

According to ACP Christopher Patit, the Melaka Tengah district police chief, the accident occurred at approximately 6.30 am. The motorcyclists were traveling from the traffic light junction at the Bukit Katil Road Transport Department towards the traffic light junction at Pantai Hospital.

Initial investigations suggest that the motorcycles entered a lane that had been cordoned off by cones, presumably by a contractor. Unfortunately, it seems that the cones were removed by the public, leading to the tragic incident. The victims were unaware of the presence of the pit and subsequently fell into it.

Response from the authorities

In response to the distress call received at 6.49 am, the Bukit Katil Fire and Rescue Station dispatched a team of firemen to the scene. Senior Fire Supt II Riduan Ahmad, the operations commander, confirmed their prompt response.

The case has been classified under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
