A tragic incident unfolded at Perry High School in Iowa, where a student identified as Dylan Butler opened fire, injuring multiple people before taking his own life. The shooting took place on Thursday, the first day of school after the winter break, just minutes before classes were scheduled to begin. Among the victims was a sixth-grade student who tragically lost their life.

Prior to the shooting, Butler had posted a selfie on the social media platform TikTok. The photo showed him in a bathroom stall with a blue duffle bag by his feet, accompanied by the caption “now we wait.” The TikTok post has since been taken down, along with Butler’s social media accounts.

The choice of music accompanying Butler’s post, “Stray Bullet” by rock group KMFDM, has drawn attention due to its association with the personal website of Eric Harris, one of the shooters in the infamous Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

Butler’s social media following exceeded 250 before his accounts were shut down.

IED Discovered at the School

Upon investigating the scene, authorities discovered an improvised explosive device (IED) in the school. Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, reported that Butler was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police successfully disposed of the IED, and the investigation continues.

Among the victims of the Perry High School shooting is Principal Dan Marburger, whose name has been withheld by the authorities.

Social Media Posts Under Scrutiny

Investigators are examining Butler’s social media activity in relation to the shooting. Assistant Director Mitch Mortvedt stated that Butler made several posts around the time of the incident, and these posts are being analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol emphasized the importance of reporting any disturbing social media content to the authorities, urging individuals to call 911 if they come across such posts. He stressed the significance of speaking up and potentially saving lives.

As the investigation into the Perry High School shooting continues, more details are expected to emerge. This story will be updated accordingly.
