Meerut, January 3: A woman has been handed a life imprisonment sentence by a court in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district for the murder of her neighbor. The convict, identified as Afshana Begum (32), set her neighbor, Zeenat Begum, on fire in an attempt to fake her own death and elope with her lover of a different faith.

The Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC), Mukesh Kumar Mittal, revealed that the testimony of Zeenat Begum’s 13-year-old daughter played a crucial role in nailing the convict.

Zeenat Begum, aged 48, was discovered dead inside a house in the Lisari Gate police station area of Meerut on April 2, 2019, bringing the heinous crime to light.

“Zeenat was married to Mohd Ashraf, who was mostly occupied with work and spent a significant amount of time outdoors. Afshana, a friend residing in the same neighborhood, frequently visited Zeenat’s house. Afshana fell in love with Pravin Kumar, an auto driver, and both desired to marry each other. However, due to religious differences and opposition from her family, their relationship faced obstacles,” stated the ADGC.

The ADGC further added, “After watching a TV serial on crime, Afshana devised a plot to murder Zeenat in her own house. One day, when Zeenat visited Afshana’s house, Afshana set her on fire using a gas cylinder pipe. She believed that everyone would mistake Zeenat’s severely burnt body for her own and that she would be able to flee with her lover. However, several weeks later, someone recognized her, and the case took a different turn. During the court hearings, Zeenat’s daughter mentioned that her mother often visited ‘Afshana aunty’s house’ and that one day she never returned.”

Following Zeenat’s husband’s complaint, as she was last seen at Afshana’s house, an investigation was launched. Upon reopening the house, the police discovered Zeenat’s earrings, slippers, and Aadhaar card, confirming that she had been burnt to death. Afshana was subsequently charged with murder, and Additional District and Sessions Judge Pawan Shukla sentenced her to life imprisonment.
