BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — Authorities in northwestern Arizona are still investigating the cause of a devastating house fire that claimed the lives of five children last month. The investigation is being carried out by chemists and electrical engineers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) at a federal laboratory, but it could take several months to determine the exact cause, according to Bullhead City police.
On December 16, a father left his four children and a young relative at home for approximately 2 1/2 hours while he went out to buy Christmas gifts and groceries. Upon his return, he discovered the charred remains of their family home. The identities of the victims have been released by the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office. The victims include 4-year-old Freya Jones, 2-year-old Elias Jones, 5-year-old Zane Jones, 13-year-old John Jones III, and 11-year-old Henry Lewis, who was a visiting relative.

The tragic incident took place in a close-knit community near the Colorado River and the Nevada border. The fire originated in the downstairs foyer area of the two-story duplex, and the flames quickly spread, blocking the only staircase inside the house. This prevented the children from escaping, and their bodies were later discovered in an upstairs bedroom.
The investigation is being conducted meticulously by the ATF, with the assistance of chemists and electrical engineers. The analysis of the fire debris is being performed in a federal laboratory to determine the exact cause of the fire. The meticulous nature of the investigation, combined with the complexity of the case, means that it could take several months before any conclusive results are obtained.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the father who left the children unattended. It remains unclear whether he will face any charges in connection with the fatal fire.
