A 40-year-old man from Painesville Township in Lake County is now facing numerous felony charges following a high-speed car chase that spanned several cities along state Route 2. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office apprehended the suspect after a dramatic pursuit, which began when the department responded to a threat complaint at a residence in Painesville Township.

According to the official news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on December 30th at approximately 4:31 p.m. The victim, a woman, reported that her estranged husband had unlawfully entered her grandmother’s house and absconded with several items without permission. What’s more, she stated that he had made threats to end her life. The situation became even more alarming as it was revealed that the suspect was both suicidal and armed with a firearm.

Once alerted, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office promptly issued an attempt-to-locate bulletin to neighboring law enforcement agencies. The suspect, operating a maroon Dodge Charger, was believed to be responsible for burglary, domestic violence, and aggravated menacing, as per the release.

The release further stated that at approximately 8:20 p.m., deputies spotted the Charger heading east on state Route 2. In an attempt to apprehend the suspect, a felony traffic stop was initiated at the intersection of Route 2 and Fairport Nursery Road. However, the suspect recklessly evaded the deputies and refused to stop.

The ensuing pursuit unfolded in a westbound direction on Route 2, with the fleeing suspect exhibiting dangerous driving behavior, reaching speeds exceeding 110 mph. Even when the Mentor Police deployed stop-sticks in an attempt to disable the vehicle, the suspect continued to evade capture and pressed on westward along Route 2.

According to the release, as the suspect attempted to exit Route 2 at Lost Nation Road in Willoughby, he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the roadway. Seizing the opportunity, the suspect allegedly abandoned the car in an attempt to flee on foot. Thankfully, deputies swiftly closed in on him and managed to apprehend him a short distance away from the abandoned vehicle.

Upon searching the suspect’s vehicle, deputies discovered what appeared to be narcotics and drug paraphernalia. To confirm the nature of the substances, these items will undergo analysis by the esteemed Lake County Crime Laboratory.

The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Brandon Modic, a resident of Painesville Township. He was subsequently booked into the Lake County Jail on multiple felony charges, in addition to several traffic citations, as outlined in the official release.

Due to the severity of the crimes committed, no bond has been set for Modic at this time.
