Newport News Police Seek Public Assistance in Solving September 2023 Homicide

Newport News, VA – The Newport News Police Department is appealing to the public for assistance in solving a tragic homicide that took place on September 3, 2023.

On the fateful evening, at approximately 8:30 PM, law enforcement officers swiftly responded to a distressing shooting incident reported in the 500 block of Catina Way. Upon arrival at the scene, officers were met by a concerned resident who relayed the distressing news that an 18-year-old male, identified as Davonte Burris, had entered his residence seeking urgent help after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. Sadly, despite the prompt arrival of medical personnel, Burris succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into this heart-wrenching incident revealed that it occurred mere moments after Burris stepped out of a Lyft vehicle. Captured on video surveillance footage, an individual on a BMX-style bicycle was observed approaching the vicinity. This unidentified person was seen discharging a firearm at Burris before hastily fleeing the scene on their bicycle.

The Newport News Police Department is actively pursuing all leads and encourages anyone who may possess valuable information pertaining to this case to come forward and assist in bringing justice to Davonte Burris and his grieving family.
