Troopers Fire at Shooting Suspect During Traffic Stop on New York State Thruway in Rockland County
New York State Police have reported that troopers opened fire on a shooting suspect during a routine traffic stop on Wednesday afternoon. The incident took place on the state Thruway in Rockland County, resulting in the fatality of the sole occupant of the vehicle after they fired shots at the troopers.
The vehicle, believed to be linked to a shooting earlier that day on Hudson Avenue in Albany, was stopped by troopers in the town of Ramapo, moments before 3 p.m., according to police officials.
During a press conference at 6:15 p.m., Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins commended the swift action taken by law enforcement in identifying the shooting suspect. He highlighted the collaboration between Albany city police and the state police, which led to the successful location of the suspect.
Hawkins expressed his appreciation, stating, “This incident serves as a stellar example of the dedication and diligent efforts displayed by Albany police, the Crime Analysis Center, and State Police.”
Following the exchange of gunfire, one trooper sustained minor injuries. However, authorities have reassured the public that there is currently no ongoing threat to their safety. The investigation into the incident is still underway.
