Colorado Mother Arrested in the UK for Allegedly Killing Her Two Children

COLORADO SPRINGS (KXRM) — The Colorado Springs Police Department and the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office released a joint statement following the arrest of 35-year-old Kimberlee Singler in the United Kingdom. Singler was arrested on Dec. 30 in the UK after a warrant was issued for her arrest on multiple counts of murder, child abuse, and attempted murder.

Singler’s two children, 7-year-old Aden Wentz and 9-year-old Elianna “Ellie” Wentz, were found dead inside a condo in Stetson Hills on Dec. 18. The police also found an 11-year-old while responding to the burglary call.

Singler, who had sustained injuries, was sent to the hospital. Once authorities discovered that the original burglary call had been false and identified Singler as a suspect, a manhunt began. Allegedly, Singler left the area only days after her children’s deaths.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez expressed his heartbreak over the loss of the innocent lives and assured the community that the police department stands with the victims, their family members, and others who are grieving. The police department, in collaboration with the District Attorney’s Office, is working tirelessly to bring justice to the victims.

However, the process of extraditing Singler back to the United States and to Colorado is expected to take a considerable amount of time. The Colorado Springs Police Department and the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office explained in their joint statement that extradition from the UK is controlled by a treaty signed in 2003, which means neither agency has control over the pace of the proceedings.

DA Michael Allen emphasized that Singler, like all persons accused of a crime, is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The extradition process is crucial to ensuring due process is afforded to her. The loss of the two young children is a tragedy that demands the full support of the District Attorney’s Office, and they are committed to being their voice in the search for justice.

According to the District Attorney, if the UK courts rule that a defendant can be extradited, an executive authority of the UK government must agree to the extradition. This process provides defendants with multiple appeal steps along the way. The arrest warrant issued on behalf of the State of Colorado for Singler remains sealed by the court and will likely remain sealed until Singler appears in court in Colorado.

Subsequent court dates regarding Singler’s extradition will be controlled by the UK courts.
