A tragic incident unfolded at Salt Lake City International Airport on Monday, as a man was discovered lifeless inside an airplane engine. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Kyler Efinger from Park City, Utah, was a ticketed passenger with a boarding pass to Denver, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD).

At approximately 9:52 p.m. local time, officers from SLCPD’s Airport Division responded to a distress call made by a store manager inside the airport. The store manager reported a “disturbance” involving Efinger, who was located on the secured side of the terminal. The nature of the disturbance is currently under investigation.

Upon arrival, SLCPD officers were informed by airport control staff that the passenger had accessed the airport’s ramp area through an emergency exit door. A thorough search was conducted, during which personal items belonging to Efinger, including clothing and shoes, were found on one of the airport’s runways.

At approximately 10:08 p.m., dispatchers notified officers that Efinger was discovered beneath an aircraft and had gained access to an engine. In response, FAA air traffic controllers instructed the pilot to shut down the plane’s engines.

Tragically, Efinger was found unconscious inside a wing-mounted engine of a commercial plane that was on the deicing pad. Despite efforts from SLCPD officers, the Salt Lake City Fire Department, and airport operations employees to revive him using CPR and naloxone, Efinger was pronounced dead at the scene.

SLCPD is collaborating with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death, which may involve a toxicology report. Passengers who were aboard the aircraft at the time of the incident were safely evacuated, and the airport’s operations remained unaffected.

Multiple agencies, including SLCPD, FAA, NTSB, and TSA, are conducting separate investigations into this tragic incident at Salt Lake City International Airport.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to airport security measures and the need for continuous vigilance to ensure the safety of all passengers and airport personnel.
