Australian media reports have revealed that Dennis is facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving, endangering life, and driving without due care. After being released on bail, he is due to appear at the Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday evening when emergency services responded to a call reporting that a woman had been hit by a vehicle at an address in Medindie, an Adelaide suburb. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Hoskins succumbed to her serious injuries.

Hoskins had a successful career in cycling, representing Australia in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in the team pursuit on the track. She was also part of the squad that claimed the 2015 world title in the same event.

Marne Fechner, the CEO of AusCycling, expressed her deep sorrow, saying, “Melissa described her team pursuit gold medal at the 2015 world championships as the highlight of her career, but for the rest of us, the highlight was just having her around. Although she retired in 2017, her presence as an alumnus of the sport has been felt and appreciated by many in the cycling and riding community.”

He also secured a silver medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics and a bronze medal in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics. Dennis made history by becoming the seventh Australian to wear the yellow jersey as the race leader at the Tour de France, setting a race record for his average speed in the opening time trial in 2015.

Named Australian Cyclist of the Year in 2015 and 2018, Dennis also triumphed in the 2015 Tour Down Under, a prestigious race held in his hometown of Adelaide. After retiring from competitive cycling, Dennis and Hoskins got married in 2018 and relocated to Adelaide from Europe.

Tragically, the couple’s plans to participate in an upcoming event at the Tour Down Under in Adelaide have been shattered by Hoskins’ untimely death. The organizers of the Tour Down Under expressed their devastation, stating, “We are devastated by the news of Melissa Hoskins’ death.
