A 24-Year-Old Father Arrested in North Carolina for Allegedly Beating Nonverbal Autistic Son to Death

A shocking incident has unfolded in North Carolina, where a 24-year-old father has been arrested after allegedly killing his 5-year-old nonverbal autistic son. The boy, identified as Karter Holloway, was reportedly beaten so severely that his brain hemorrhaged and he was left bruised “from head to toe.” The suspect, Amir Devon Hines, was taken into custody on New Year’s Eve and is now facing charges of murder and felony intentional child abuse.

Tragic Assault at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital

According to a news release from the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded to a distress call at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Hospital. The call involved a 5-year-old male child who had been the victim of a “serious assault.” Upon arrival, first responders were informed by the hospital staff that the child, later identified as Karter Holloway, had sustained injuries consistent with a severe assault, which had occurred in Raleigh. The young boy was admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Investigators soon determined that the child’s father, Amir Devon Hines, was responsible for the injuries. Hines was immediately arrested and charged with felony intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury. Tragically, Karter Holloway succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on January 1st. Subsequently, Hines, who was already in custody, was charged with the murder of his son.

Previous Criminal History of the Father

It has come to light that at the time of his latest arrest, Amir Devon Hines was on parole. According to a report from Goldsboro CBS affiliate WNCN, Hines had been released from prison in August 2023 after serving a six-year sentence for felony robbery with a dangerous weapon.

A Grieving Grandmother Speaks Out

Tiffani Hines, Karter Holloway’s grandmother, spoke about the young boy and the devastating loss in an emotional interview with Raleigh NBC affiliate WRAL. She fondly remembered Karter’s love for superheroes and his close bond with his grandmother. Tiffani Holloway shared that Karter had limited verbal abilities but found ways to communicate with his loved ones.

Heartbreakingly, Karter Holloway was spending the holidays with his father when the alleged beating took place. Tiffani Holloway revealed that the Christmas presents she had bought for her grandson were still unopened under her tree, a painful reminder of the tragedy that unfolded.

Conflicting Claims and Medical Evidence

According to Tiffani Holloway, she spoke to Amir Devon Hines after her grandson sustained his injuries. Hines purportedly told her that the boy had fallen in the shower. However, both Tiffani Holloway and the hospital staff strongly believe that this explanation does not align with the severe injuries Karter Holloway suffered.

Tiffani Holloway stated, “Medical reports told us the medical truth, which was he was beaten all over. Karter had bruises from head to toe.” The evidence contradicts Hines’ claim, raising further questions about the circumstances leading to the 5-year-old’s tragic demise.

A Mother’s Heartbreaking Plea

In a poignant social media post, Karter Holloway’s mother, Madi Holloway, appeared to address Amir Devon Hines directly. She expressed her anguish over her son’s vulnerability due to his autism and pleaded with Hines to have been the person he should have felt safe with. Madi Holloway’s post conveyed the deep pain of losing her child with fear in his eyes and heart.

Court Appearance and Current Status

During Hines’ court appearance on Tuesday, he appeared remorseless when informed by the judge that Karter had died. He is currently being held on a $500,000 bond as the investigation continues.
