The NYPD Identifies Victims in Fatal Crash on Cross Island Parkway in Whitestone
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has recently released the identities of the victims involved in a tragic car crash on the Cross Island Parkway in Whitestone that occurred on New Year’s Day. Among the five individuals who lost their lives were three residents from a home in Jackson Heights and a man from LeFrak City in Corona. The fifth victim was from North Carolina.
The collision took place just before 6 a.m. near the exit to the Whitestone Expressway, commonly known as “dead man’s curve.” The crash involved two vehicles, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Kazeem Ramsahai, who was driving one of the cars, along with his four passengers from Queens.
Mario Campo, aged 30, Dayanara Benitez-Campo, aged 19, and Salma Garcia-Diaz, aged 23, all resided in the same house on 82nd Street, located one block north of Northern Boulevard. It remains unclear whether the Campos were related. The fourth passenger, Jordy Betances, aged 20, hailed from the Horace Harding Expressway in LeFrak City.
Authorities from the 109th Precinct in Flushing responded to a 911 call reporting the collision on the northbound Cross Island Expressway, near the exit to the Whitestone Expressway southbound ramp in Whitestone at approximately 5:52 a.m.
According to preliminary investigations, Ramsahai was operating a Mazda at a high rate of speed when it collided with a Honda, causing the Mazda to flip and trapping all five occupants inside. Emergency responders extricated the injured 63-year-old Honda driver, who was then rushed to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Unfortunately, all five individuals in the Mazda were pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by the police.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing, as stated by the NYPD.
