Investigation Continues in the Death of Ponoka Man

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is actively investigating the death of a 37-year-old man, Derek Westling, whose life was tragically cut short on November 10, 2023, in Ponoka. Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with the case, but authorities remain committed to solving this heinous crime.

On that fateful day, Ponoka RCMP members discovered the lifeless body of Derek Westling in his residence on 57 Avenue. Following a thorough autopsy, the RCMP officially declared the death as a homicide, launching an intensive investigation to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice.

Seeking assistance from the public, the RCMP made a public appeal on November 20, urging anyone with information about a white pickup truck spotted in the vicinity during the time of the incident to come forward. This information could potentially provide valuable leads for the investigators.

Providing an update on January 2, Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, a public information officer, confirmed that the RCMP has diligently followed up on all tips received. However, due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the lead investigator refrained from disclosing any details regarding the progress made thus far.

While the RCMP acknowledged that the victim had a prior history with law enforcement, they remain dedicated to finding the truth and ensuring justice for Derek Westling.
