Gregory Sangle, a 43-year-old individual, now faces charges of second-degree murder and possession of a bulletproof vest while committing certain offenses in relation to the shooting.

The incident took place on Thursday, December 28, 2023, when officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a person shot at the apartments located on Collins Road.

Upon arrival, the officers discovered the victim, identified as 55-year-old Arthur George, at the top of a wheelchair ramp in front of his residence. George had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, as stated in the report.

Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

The arrest report indicates that the victim’s cell phone was found beneath his right hand, while a 2×8 piece of wood was discovered near the crime scene.

According to the police, there were no obstructions from the front door of the residence to the bottom of the wheelchair ramp, implying that the suspect had a clear path to leave the premises instead of engaging with the victim.

A witness at the scene flagged down the officers shortly after their arrival and informed them that they had seen the suspect walking along Collins Road.

The suspect, identified as Gregory Sangle, was subsequently arrested by the police. During the process of being taken into custody, Sangle made spontaneous statements, as mentioned in the report.

According to the arrest report, Sangle claimed that the victim had used the 2×8 piece of wood found at the scene to strike him before the shooting occurred.

However, the report raises doubts about Sangle’s claim, stating that considering the size and weight of the board, it is highly improbable that there would be no injury to Sangle. Furthermore, it questions the feasibility of the victim successfully swinging the board while holding a cell phone in his dominant hand.

Sangle made his first appearance in Duval County Court on Friday and is currently held in the Duval County Jail without bond.

The next court date for Gregory Sangle is scheduled for Thursday, January 18, at 9 a.m.
