According to court documents, on the evening of January 2, law enforcement received a distressing call reporting shots fired in the vicinity of the 2500 block of North Elgin Street at around 9:30 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man identified as Khalil Malik McCraney actively shooting at a vehicle. The suspect was also found to be in possession of a semi-automatic rifle equipped with a high-capacity magazine.

Victim’s Testimony and Surveillance Footage

While investigating the incident, Muncie police also responded to a local hospital where a woman had been admitted with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim cooperated with investigators, providing crucial information about the shooting. Furthermore, video surveillance footage obtained from the nearby apartment complex captured the entire incident, aiding the police in their investigation.

Details of the Incident

The surveillance footage revealed that the woman had arrived at her apartment and parked her vehicle. Shortly after, McCraney appeared on the scene. The probable cause report states that McCraney proceeded to fire multiple rounds towards the woman, who was seated in her vehicle. The footage even captured the front driver’s window shattering due to the gunfire. In a state of panic, the victim fled the area, while McCraney fled in the opposite direction.

McCraney’s Account and Police Findings

In a subsequent interview with investigators, McCraney claimed that the victim had shot at his grandfather’s home on East Highland Avenue earlier that day. According to McCraney, the woman returned to the scene and fired at the residence once again. McCraney, accompanied by his father, followed the woman back to the apartment complex. McCraney justified his actions by stating that he felt scared and acted in self-defense. However, the surveillance footage did not show the woman returning fire, and the positioning of McCraney during the incident suggested an ambush-style assault.

Recovery of Ammunition and Arrest

Crime scene investigators meticulously collected 31 rifle rounds from the area where McCraney was seen firing his weapon in the video footage. The woman sustained approximately four gunshot wounds during the attack. As a result of the evidence gathered, McCraney was arrested and charged with attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, as well as criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony.

Legal Proceedings

An initial hearing for McCraney has not yet been scheduled, and the case remains under investigation. The police are working diligently to ensure that justice is served in this shocking incident of violence.
