Arkansas Family Identified in Deadly Michigan House Explosion

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Authorities in Michigan have identified the six people involved in a tragic home explosion over the weekend as an Arkansas family. The Northfield Township Police Department revealed on Facebook that the home belonged to Richard Pruden, a 72-year-old man. Pruden was the father of Hope Bragg, 51, who was visiting with her husband Don Bragg, 53, and their three children Kenneth Bragg, 22, Elizabeth Bragg, 19, and Stephen Bragg, 16, for the holidays when the explosion occurred.

Tragic Loss of Life

Regrettably, the explosion claimed the lives of everyone except for Stephen Bragg and Richard Pruden, who both sustained injuries. The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, as investigators have referred to it as an “undetermined fuel-air explosion” and do not suspect any foul play.

Don Bragg, who had worked at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for over 20 years, was highly regarded by his colleagues. Described as a brilliant scientist and writer, he made significant contributions to the field. Hope Bragg, on the other hand, was involved with the university for a decade and served as a 4-H Instructor through the extension service. She rose up through the 4-H program for the University of Arkansas Systems Division of Agriculture.

Michael Blazier, the Dean of the College of Forestry, Agriculture, and Natural Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, expressed his grief over the loss. He described the Braggs as “angels amongst us” and highlighted their exceptional intelligence, hard work, kindness, and commitment to service.

Matthew Rooney, a Research Station Archaeologist who knew the Bragg family through the University, expressed his devastation upon hearing the news. He described the manner of their passing as horrific and found it difficult to imagine their last moments. In addition to their professional achievements, the Bragg children, who tragically lost their lives in the explosion, were exceptional students with talent in music and science.

Known for their willingness to help others without being asked, they would always step up to take leadership roles.
