Man Dies After Jumping Out of Moving Police Van

In a tragic incident, a 47-year-old man, identified as Pramod, met with his demise after jumping out of a moving police van early Wednesday morning. The incident took place when the patrolling staff was taking the accused, who had reportedly molested and abused a woman near Shanti Mohalla, to the New Usmanpur police station. Pramod, who was in an inebriated state, suddenly opened the glass window and leaped out of the vehicle. The victim sustained severe injuries as he fell on the road. Despite the efforts of the police to provide immediate medical attention, Pramod could not be admitted to any hospital due to the unavailability of beds and equipment, leading to his unfortunate death.

Multiple Hospital Referrals

Following the incident, the police personnel swiftly arranged for Pramod’s transportation to four different government hospitals. However, the scarcity of beds and equipment hindered his admission. Initially taken to Jag Pravesh Chandra (JPC) Hospital, he was subsequently referred to GTB Hospital but could not be admitted due to the unavailability of CT-Scan facilities. The situation persisted as Pramod was then referred to LNJP Hospital, where the ICU Ventilator beds were already occupied. The victim was then transported to RML Hospital, but the authorities there denied admission. Finally, he was brought back to JPC Hospital, where tragically he was declared dead at 5.45 am.

Investigation and Autopsy

In light of this unfortunate incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Joy Tirkey informed that a medical board would be constituted to conduct an autopsy. The DCP also expressed concern over the inability of hospitals to provide proper medical treatment to the victim, who had been shuttled from one medical facility to another. The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter to ascertain the circumstances leading to Pramod’s death.

The Incident and Criminal Background

The incident unfolded when a woman residing in Shanti Mohalla, New Usmanpur, made a distress call to the police control room around 9 pm. She alleged that Pramod, in an inebriated state, had molested and abused her. The police team promptly responded and upon reaching the spot, the 21-year-old complainant narrated the incident, stating that she had confronted Pramod, triggering a quarrel. Subsequently, the police arrested Pramod and placed him in the police van to transport him to the New Usmanpur police station.

DCP Tirkey revealed that Pramod had a previous criminal record, including involvement in two cases, one of which was an attempted murder in 2015. A case has been registered at the police station against Pramod for molestation, sexual harassment, and assault based on the woman’s complaint.
