A 32-year-old woman has been given a life imprisonment sentence by a Meerut court for the murder of her neighbor. Afshana Begum, the convicted woman, committed the crime in an attempt to stage her own death and elope with her partner who belonged to a different faith.
The victim, Zeenat Begum, was 48 years old at the time of her death. The crucial testimony of Zeenat’s 13-year-old daughter played a key role in the conviction, according to Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Mukesh Kumar Mittal, who described it as a pivotal piece of evidence.

Over time, Afshana developed romantic feelings for an auto driver named Pravin Kumar. However, their desire to get married faced obstacles due to differences in faith and disapproval from Afshana’s family.
Motivated by a TV serial on crime, Afshana devised a plan to kill Zeenat in her own house. One day, when Zeenat visited Afshana’s house, the convicted woman used a gas cylinder pipe to set Zeenat on fire.
Believing that everyone would mistake Zeenat’s severely burned body for her own, Afshana fled with her lover.
However, a few weeks later, her plan was discovered, leading to the unraveling of the case. Zeenat’s daughter testified in court that her mother frequently visited “Afshana aunty’s house,” but one day she didn’t return.
