Cedar Rapids Police Shooting: 20-Year-Old Victim Identified as Michael Griffin

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The authorities have now identified the young man who tragically lost his life during a shooting incident involving the Cedar Rapids police on Monday. The victim has been named as 20-year-old Michael Griffin, a resident of Cedar Rapids.

Following the incident, a preliminary autopsy of Michael Griffin has been conducted. However, the results of the autopsy are not expected to be released for several weeks, as per the officials.

According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the unfortunate chain of events began early on Monday morning, around 6:30 a.m., when the police responded to a report of a drive-by shooting in the 400 block of Longwood Drive NE.

After locating the suspect vehicle, a high-speed chase ensued. The pursuit unfolded along 1st Avenue near 12th Street East. It was during this intense chase that the driver, now identified as Michael Griffin, allegedly pointed a firearm out of the car window and opened fire on the pursuing officers.

At one point during the chase, a passenger in the vehicle exited and was successfully apprehended. The passenger has been identified as a juvenile, though no further details have been disclosed.

The chase continued to Mount Vernon Road SE and 34th Street SE, where Griffin allegedly continued to discharge his weapon towards the officers. Eventually, his vehicle veered off the road in the 5600 block of Mount Vernon Road SE.

As law enforcement officials gave Griffin verbal commands, he reportedly fired his weapon again from inside the vehicle. In response, five officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the fatal shooting of Griffin. The exact cause of his death, however, has not been confirmed by officials at this time.
