Charleston Department of Public Safety Investigates Homicide

CHARLESTON, MO (WSIL) – The Charleston Department of Public Safety has launched a homicide investigation following a fatal shooting in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Police Chief Robert Hearnes emphasized the danger posed by individuals who resort to violence, stating, “Anybody that’s going to shoot anyone is dangerous. We would like to get these people off the street.”

According to Chief Hearnes, at approximately 4 a.m. on January 1, dispatch received a call reporting a shooting in the 500 block of Ada Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Malik Jones from Caruthersville, MO. Due to this, Chief Hearnes revealed that his department has reached out to several other agencies for assistance in the ongoing investigation.

As of January 3, 1:15 p.m., a suspect remains at large.

Joint Investigation with Missouri State Highway Patrol and Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office

“Missouri State Highway Patrol and The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation,” explained Chief Hearnes.

The police chief is urging anyone with information to come forward and help with the case. He emphasized the significance of public cooperation, stating, “Somebody may have some pertinent information, and it’s important that we get justice for the victim’s family. If you have any information, please call us. We can’t solve this by ourselves.”

Chief Hearnes acknowledged that the area has experienced a high number of shootings, making this tragic incident unfortunately less uncommon. He added, “It’s been a while since we’ve had a homicide, and I’d like to see it solved as quickly as possible.”

While the investigation is ongoing, Chief Hearnes assures the public that immediate danger is unlikely. However, he advises caution and vigilance within the town.
