Police arrest 18-year-old in connection with Washington D.C.’s first homicide of 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a significant breakthrough, the Metropolitan Police have apprehended Jelani Cousin, an 18-year-old, in connection with the city’s first homicide of the year. Cousin now faces charges of second-degree murder while armed for the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Ashlei Hinds from Clinton, Maryland.

The tragic incident took place in the early hours of New Year’s Day at the Embassy Suites located on the 4300 block of Military Road NW, situated in the Friendship Heights neighborhood. The shooting was reported shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Monday, January 1.

Councilmember Matt Frumin, providing insights into the unfolding tragedy, stated that the incident occurred during a party at the hotel when an individual, later identified as Cousin, discharged a firearm inside one of the rooms, ultimately resulting in the untimely demise of Hinds.

In an effort to swiftly solve the case, the Metropolitan Police Department released photographs of the suspected shooter on Tuesday. The dissemination of these images proved crucial in identifying Cousin, leading to his subsequent arrest. This incident has reignited discussions surrounding gun violence in the area, prompting renewed conversations about safety and security in public spaces.
