Mother of 10-year-old boy shot dead by another child in California says he was killed over lost bike race

Brittani, the grieving mother of a 10-year-old boy shot and killed in California, has spoken out about the tragic incident that took the life of her son. The heartbroken mother shared that her son had simply gone outside to ride his new bike and engage in a friendly race with some other kids he considered his friends.

The incident occurred on Saturday around 4:30 pm local time, as reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Shockingly, the suspected shooter is another 10-year-old boy, whose father, identified as 53-year-old Arkete Davis, has also been arrested in connection with the shooting.

According to investigators, the 10-year-old child obtained a gun from Davis’ vehicle and used it to fatally shoot another 10-year-old boy, recently identified as Keith Frierson. Detectives also revealed that Davis attempted to dispose of the weapon by throwing it into a nearby trashcan.

Brittani expressed her anguish, stating, “Instead of aiding my baby, he tried to hide it. He tried to cover it up. He left my baby there. He will pay for this. We’ll get justice for my son.”

The family and loved ones of Keith hold Davis responsible for the tragic fate of both Keith and the 10-year-old boy accused of shooting him. Keith’s godmother, Nina Trepagnier, emphasized the importance of parental responsibility, stating, “It starts at home. This is the parents’ fault. They failed that child. And it took our boy because they failed him, because they were poor examples.”

A vigil was held on Monday night to remember Keith, where those closest to him described his loving, selfless, and kind nature. Trepagnier fondly recalled Keith’s sense of humor, helpfulness, dependability, and respectfulness.

Keith was an active child who had a passion for sports, particularly football, where he played for the Jr. Foothill Mustangs. Coaches from the team attended the vigil to pay tribute to the young boy they affectionately referred to as a “gentle giant.”

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that the firearm used in the shooting had been reported stolen in 2017. Additionally, Davis, a convicted felon, should not have had possession of a firearm. As a result, Davis faces several felony gun-related charges, in addition to child endangerment and accessory after the fact.

The 10-year-old suspected shooter has been taken to the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility, where he has been charged with murder. Davis is currently held at the Sacramento County Main Jail, with bail set at US$500,000. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday local time.
