Two killed and 10 Injured in Separate Crashes on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

As the world celebrated the New Year’s Day with joy and excitement, two tragic accidents occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuring 10 others. These incidents serve as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety during festive periods.

Lone Crash Claims Two Lives near Isara Remo

A solitary crash took place around 8 am near Isara Remo, the administrative headquarters of Remo North Local Government Area in Ogun State. The accident involved a Toyota car with the registration number TTD985AA and was attributed to excessive speed. Tragically, two passengers lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries.

The injured victims were promptly rushed to Victory Hospital Ogere for urgent medical attention, whereas the bodies of the deceased were respectfully deposited at the Isara General Hospital morgue. According to Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash involved a total of five individuals, including three male children, one male adult, and one female adult.

Okpe stated, “Three persons were injured, including one female adult, one male adult, and one male child. Regrettably, two male children lost their lives. The suspected cause of the lone crash was excessive speed, which led to the vehicle losing control and veering into a ditch.”

Fiery Accident Injures Seven at Arepo Bus Stop

In a separate incident, a commercial Mazda bus with the registration number SKD-798XN caught fire at the Arepo bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This terrifying event resulted in seven out of the 14 passengers sustaining injuries, fortunately escaping death.

An eyewitness, identified as Gabriel, shared the severity of the accident, revealing that more than 18 passengers, including children, were involved in the early morning crash. Gabriel expressed, “The accident happened in the morning, and it was a serious one. The bus’s tires burst, and there were possibly more than 18 passengers, including infants, as some individuals were completely burnt.”

Samson, another eyewitness, mentioned that officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps promptly assisted in transferring some of the injured victims to a nearby hospital. He said, “The accident was severe, and a few people sustained critical injuries. Fortunately, there were people nearby who quickly extinguished the fire. Some FRSC officials transported some of the victims to a hospital in Arepo, while others were taken to Magboro or Mowe hospitals.”

Upon contacting the Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Florence Okpe provided further details about the accident involving the Mazda bus. She explained that the vehicle’s tires burst due to excessive speeding, causing it to somersault. Thankfully, none of the 14 passengers lost their lives, but seven individuals, comprising five males and two females, suffered injuries and were immediately taken to the AZ Medical Care Hospital in Magboro, Ogun State.

These unfortunate accidents serve as a somber reminder to all road users of the importance of adhering to speed limits and practicing caution while driving.
