Griffin Community Mourns Loss of Spalding County Deputy

GRIFFIN, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Griffin community is in deep sorrow after the tragic loss of Sgt. Marc McIntyre, a dedicated officer serving the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years. Sgt. McIntyre was killed in the line of duty on Friday, leaving behind a grieving family and a community in mourning.

In the wake of this devastating incident, numerous downtown Griffin businesses have joined forces to provide support to Sgt. McIntyre’s family during this difficult time.

One such business is Corner Café, owned by Juan Diaz, a long-time friend of McIntyre’s family. Diaz fondly remembers McIntyre as a compassionate individual with a huge heart, who was an incredible asset to the community. Determined to contribute to the family’s well-being, Diaz has organized two spirit night fundraisers at his restaurant. Another local establishment, Downtown Nutrition, is offering a special “police tea” for sale. For every purchase of this dedicated beverage, $2 will be donated to Sgt. McIntyre’s family over the next several weeks.

Addressing concerns about fraudulent donation accounts, the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office released an official statement cautioning the public. They clarified that no GoFundMe account has been set up for Sgt. McIntyre, his fiancé, or anyone else. However, they are in the process of establishing a dedicated bank account for donations. Once the account is open and available, the Sheriff’s Office will provide the necessary details to make secure contributions. They also urged the community to remain vigilant, as scammers often take advantage of such tragic situations.

The fatal incident unfolded when Sgt. McIntyre was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call on Friday morning. The ensuing events led to a tense hours-long standoff at a residence on Deason Street. Eventually, the suspect, identified as Todd Lamar Harper, was apprehended by law enforcement.

Juan Diaz emphasized that the community is steadfast in their support for Sgt. McIntyre’s grieving family. The outpouring of love and solidarity from the Griffin community continues to provide comfort and solace during this challenging time.
