Patterson, a deputy with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, was off-duty when he witnessed an emergency unfold before his eyes and quickly sprang into action to provide first-aid.

Having served in the Army, Patterson credits his crisis training for his quick response. He was on a walk with his wife and their five-month-old child when he heard what sounded like a vehicle collision.

Approaching the scene, Patterson discovered a car had veered off Zinfandel Drive and crashed into the chain link fence along the athletic fields of Mitchell Middle School in Rancho Cordova.

As bystanders called for emergency assistance, Patterson assessed the situation and attempted to communicate with the unresponsive driver. Realizing the man wasn’t breathing, Patterson enlisted the help of another bystander to break the passenger-side window and gain access to the car.

With the driver door open, Patterson pulled the man out and checked his vital signs. The driver had no pulse and wasn’t breathing, prompting Patterson to immediately start performing CPR.

Just two weeks prior, Patterson had completed CPR, first aid, and AED training, which allowed him to act instinctively in this crisis. He continued chest compressions for about a minute until the Rancho Cordova Police arrived on the scene.

Patterson’s wife played a crucial role in managing the chaos and organizing bystanders, allowing her husband to focus on providing life-saving measures to the driver.

The Sheriff’s Office later revealed that the driver had suffered a seizure, causing him to veer off the road.

Reflecting on the incident, Deputy Patterson encourages others to learn CPR, emphasizing the importance of being prepared to help loved ones or strangers during emergencies.

Thanks to Patterson’s swift actions, the driver is expected to make a full recovery.

Cory Patterson’s heroism on New Year’s Eve serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared to act in times of crisis. His quick response and knowledge of CPR helped save a man’s life, showcasing the critical role that ordinary individuals can play in emergency situations..
