According to the police, emergency services were called to an address in Medindie, an Adelaide suburb, on Saturday evening after receiving reports of a woman being struck by a vehicle. The driver, identified as Rohan Dennis, was known to the victim. Despite being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Melissa Hoskins succumbed to her injuries.

Melissa Hoskins had competed in the team pursuit at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, winning a gold medal at the 2015 world championships in the same event. She also had a successful career in road cycling with the Australian team GreenEDGE.

Marne Fechner, the CEO of AusCyling, paid tribute to Melissa, describing her team pursuit gold medal as the highlight of her career. Fechner emphasized the impact Melissa had on the cycling and riding community, even after her retirement in 2017.

Rohan Dennis, aged 33, had an illustrious cycling career, winning two world titles in the road time trial. He also won silver in the team pursuit at the London Olympics and bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics. In 2015, he became the seventh Australian to wear the yellow jersey as the race leader at the Tour de France.

Dennis was named Australian cyclist of the year in 2015 and 2018 and won the Tour Down Under in his hometown of Adelaide. After retiring from competitive cycling, Dennis and Melissa got married in 2018 and relocated to Adelaide from Europe. They have two children together.
