EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) – On the eve of the new year, a devastating car accident occurred in Columbia County, Georgia, leaving one person dead and a 16-year-old facing charges. The collision took place at the intersection of Furys Ferry Rd. and Millstone Dr. at approximately 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, prompting a prompt response from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Carson Downs, a resident of Anderson, South Carolina. The news of his untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends and family in mourning. Keith Pritchett, a close friend of Downs, expressed his disbelief and sorrow upon hearing the tragic news. Pritchett described Downs as a remarkable individual, emphasizing his intelligence, friendly nature, and positive attitude. In an attempt to avoid a collision, Downs swerved into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with the 4Runner. Downs sustained critical injuries and was rushed to AU Medical Center, where he tragically succumbed to his wounds. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that alcohol was not a contributing factor in the accident.
