OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) – Cpl. Lucas Watts, a deputy with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina, achieved a significant milestone in his recovery after being shot in the line of duty.

On November 16, during a pursuit, Watts was shot in the head by a suspect, resulting in his hospitalization. However, in a remarkable turn of events, Watts recently spoke for the first time since the incident.
The Oconee County sheriff described Watts’ survival as nothing short of a miracle.
In an update posted on CaringBridge on New Year’s Eve, Watts’ family shared the encouraging news that he had spoken his first words while undergoing rehabilitation at a specialized facility.
Watts, lying in his bed, communicated his desire to have the fan in his room turned on to his family and friends present. Initially, there was an element of surprise and disbelief, but upon repeating his request and confirming his preference, his loved ones promptly fulfilled his wish.

Although the family expressed their excitement upon hearing the 27-year-old deputy speak for the first time since the shooting, they emphasized that there is still a long road to recovery ahead.
While these small steps of improvement might give the impression that he is fully alert and awake, the reality is that his consciousness fluctuates. However, the ability to communicate verbally is undoubtedly a cause for celebration and signifies his continued progress.
The suspect responsible for shooting Watts has been identified as Gregory Maxwell. He remains incarcerated and has been denied bond.
