In a shocking incident that unfolded in California, a child was tragically shot dead, leading to the subsequent arrest of a father and his 10-year-old son. Witnesses present at the scene informed authorities that the individuals responsible for the shooting had fled into a nearby apartment. Promptly responding to the situation, deputies swiftly detained all individuals in the mentioned apartment without any resistance, comprising an adult and two juveniles, according to a statement released by the sheriff’s office.

The adult, identified as 53-year-old Arkete Davis, was among those detained. The sheriff’s office also confirmed the apprehension of Davis’ 10-year-old son, who had accessed a firearm from his father’s vehicle while retrieving cigarettes for him. Shockingly, the young boy had boasted about his father’s possession of the gun before shooting the victim once and fleeing into the aforementioned apartment. The authorities have not disclosed any information regarding the relationship between the 10-year-old suspect and the victim.

During the investigation, detectives discovered a firearm discarded in a nearby trashcan, which they believe Davis had attempted to dispose of. It was further revealed that Davis was legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm, and the recovered weapon had been reported stolen in 2017.

As a result of their actions, the 10-year-old son was arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently taken to the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility. Davis, on the other hand, is facing multiple felony charges related to firearms, in addition to charges of child endangerment and accessory after the fact.

The sheriff’s office has informed that Davis is currently in custody with a bail set at US$500,000 (NZ$792,000), and he is scheduled to appear in court on January 3. It remains unclear if Davis has obtained legal representation at this time.

This devastating incident sheds light on the growing issue of firearm-related fatalities among US children. Disturbingly, firearms have now surpassed motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of death among American youth.
