Peaceful New Year Celebrations in Bengaluru

Despite a few minor incidents, the New Year revelry in Bengaluru was largely peaceful. Brigade Road and MG Road, the popular epicentres of celebrations in the city, witnessed a mild lathi-charge by the police to disperse the crowd. Traffic movement in the areas surrounding these roads was affected for a few hours after midnight.

The police swiftly responded to incidents of misbehavior and violence during the New Year celebrations. A person from Mandya was taken into custody after misbehaving with a woman. In another incident, a man who misbehaved with a woman faced retaliation from her boyfriend.

One incident at a pub in Koramangala involved a person who started a quarrel with the management for not playing a Kannada song. The police intervened to pacify the situation and restore order.

At the Church Street junction, a pickpocket was caught red-handed by the public and handed over to the police. The police found a mobile phone on the pickpocket, which was promptly returned to its owner. Additionally, the police stopped miscreants wearing face masks who attempted to harass women in the same area, ensuring their masks were removed.

Another incident involved the son of a Kerala police officer who was attacked near a pub in Koramangala. The individual, identified as Stalin, had come to Bengaluru to celebrate the New Year. While leaving a pub on Hosur Road with his friends, two of them allegedly inappropriately touched a woman outside the establishment. This led to a fight between the woman’s friends and the two individuals. When Stalin intervened, he was attacked and suffered dental damage. Stalin claimed to be the son of a superintendent of police in Kerala when the police arrived at the scene. The Adugodi police are currently investigating the matter.

Traffic Police Crackdown on Drunk Driving

The city’s traffic police cracked down on drunk driving during the New Year celebrations. A total of 330 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol on Sunday night and early Monday morning. The traffic police conducted checks on over 7,620 vehicles across the city to ensure road safety.

Accident Reports

Till midnight on Sunday, one fatal accident and ten non-fatal accidents were reported. Between midnight and 7 am on Monday, three fatal accidents were recorded.
