Winnipeg Police Confirm Identity of Man Fatally Shot on New Year’s Eve

The lawyer representing the family of a young man who was fatally shot by Winnipeg police on New Year’s Eve has officially confirmed the victim’s identity. Afolabi Stephen Opaso, a 19-year-old international student from Nigeria, was pursuing his studies at the prestigious University of Manitoba. This tragic incident has left the community in shock and has raised questions about police conduct.

Police Respond to Disturbance Call

The incident occurred on December 31, around 2:20 p.m., when the Winnipeg Police received a distress call regarding a man exhibiting erratic behavior in an apartment suite located in the first 100 block of University Crescent. In response to the call, two police officers promptly arrived at the scene.

Armed Confrontation Leads to Fatality

Upon entering the apartment suite, the officers discovered three individuals present. Chief Danny Smyth, the Winnipeg Police Chief, revealed during a press conference that one of the individuals, later identified as Afolabi Stephen Opaso, was armed with two knives. In the course of their interaction, a use of force encounter took place between the officers and Opaso, tragically resulting in Opaso being shot.

Victim Succumbs to Injuries

Following the shooting, Opaso was immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he sadly succumbed to his injuries. The two other individuals present in the apartment suite remained unharmed during the incident.

Independent Investigation Underway

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has taken charge of the case and is conducting a thorough investigation. The IIU has appealed to the public for any information that may assist with their inquiry. Additionally, they have announced their intention to request the appointment of a civilian monitor by the Manitoba Police Commission, given the fatality involved in the incident. Presently, no further details regarding the ongoing investigation have been provided to the public.
