Retail Theft Suspect Who Died in Escondido Pursuit Crash Identified as Shevondia Compare-Bell

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the individual who tragically lost their life last month in Escondido during a police pursuit crash. The deceased has been identified as Shevondia Compare-Bell, an 18-year-old resident of San Diego.

Details of the Theft

The incident took place on December 18 when three suspects, consisting of two women and one man, were reported to be involved in a retail theft from Dick’s Sporting Goods store on Auto Park Way, as reported by the Escondido police. The stolen items were yet to be disclosed.

The Pursuit

Upon the arrival of the police, the suspects hastily fled the scene in a pickup truck, which was later discovered to be stolen. This led to a high-speed chase initiated by the officers to apprehend the culprits. However, the pursuit took a tragic turn when the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to navigate a turn from Washington Avenue onto Fig Street. The truck crashed into a solid concrete barrier, resulting in significant damage.

The Fatal Consequences

Unfortunately, Shevondia Compare-Bell, one of the two women who were present in the vehicle, was ejected from the truck during the collision. The impact of the crash proved fatal for her, causing her untimely demise. The other female suspect also sustained injuries in the accident, although the extent of her injuries has not been disclosed.

The Driver

The person behind the wheel during this ill-fated pursuit was identified as Lance Cpl. John Eugene Brand, a Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Brand was promptly arrested at the scene and is currently facing multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, evading causing death, and causing great bodily injury.

It is important to note that Lance Cpl. John Eugene Brand has pleaded not guilty to the aforementioned charges.
