Kenneth Brown, the accused, was arrested last week and charged with one count of first-degree murder in the slaying of Maria Roque. The Illinois authorities made the announcement regarding the arrest and charges.

According to the Chicago Police Department, members of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended Brown on December 29 at an area in the 3100 block of W. Harrison Street. The police confirmed that Brown was identified as the offender who shot and killed Roque in the early morning hours of December 13. The incident occurred in front of her home located in the 500 block of N. Long Avenue in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago’s West Side.

As previously reported by Law&Crime, an arrest warrant was issued for Brown one day before Roque’s death due to an alleged violation of the protection order she had against him. The protection order was extended on December 13, just hours after Roque was killed. Court records reviewed by Law&Crime revealed that a protection order was initially issued on November 7 and then extended on November 28. It was further extended on December 13 and was set to last until January 3, 2024.

The protection order was granted in November after Roque accused Brown of assaulting her during an argument. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Brown had allegedly grabbed her and slammed her to the ground. He also reportedly threatened to set Roque’s car on fire and destroy her personal possessions.

The protection order explicitly prohibited Brown from having any contact with Roque and stated that he was not allowed to take their 8-year-old daughter or any pets out of Roque’s care.

According to police reports cited by the Chicago Sun-Times, Roque was in front of her home at around 6:20 a.m. on December 13. She had just placed her daughter, who she shared with Brown, into the back seat of a rental car. It was at this moment that the suspect allegedly approached her.

Upon spotting Brown, Roque screamed and attempted to run away. However, she was shot multiple times, sustaining wounds to her shoulder, chest, and thumb.

Roque’s twin brother, Andres Roque, expressed his heartbreak over his sister’s violent death in an on-camera interview with Chicago CBS affiliate WBBM. He shared that Roque’s daughter and 14-year-old son witnessed their mother’s murder. The older boy even tried to perform CPR on his mother, telling his uncle, “I tried to save her.”

Andres Roque said, “Me hearing my nephew cry and say, ‘I tried to save her,’ one in the car, and one he heard the shot, and see his own mom on the stairs, trying to breathe. That’s the most horrible.”

Brown appeared in court for the first time on Sunday. The judge ordered him to remain in custody without bond. Brown’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, as per records.
