The shooting incident that took place on December 28, 2023, in Dassel Township, continues to be under investigation, as stated in a news release by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, identified as 29-year-old Kayla Demarais from rural Dassel, tragically lost her life in the incident. According to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, her death has been ruled a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds.

Law enforcement authorities swiftly apprehended the suspect, Bryan Demarais, aged 35 and also from rural Dassel. He has been arrested on charges of second-degree murder and is currently being held in the Meeker County Jail. His first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

On the day of the incident, Bryan Demarais himself alerted the authorities, making a distressing call to report that he had shot his wife. A prompt law enforcement response followed his call.

Fortunately, two children present in the residence during the shooting were unharmed. They have since been placed in protective custody to ensure their safety and well-being.

The investigation into this tragic event remains active and ongoing.
