Speaking about the incident, Sheriff Cooper stated, “Last night’s homicide of a ten-year-old boy was tragic and completely avoidable. As more details of the incident come to light, there is definitely a concern about irresponsible parenting and the fact that an ex-felon was illegally in possession of a firearm, which eventually led to this young boy’s murder. It is important not to overlook the trauma experienced by the 6-year-old child who witnessed the entire incident.”
Highlighting a disturbing trend in Sacramento County, the Sheriff revealed, “Out of the 34 homicides in the county involving firearms, 76% of them were committed by individuals who were not legally allowed to possess guns. Of particular concern are felons who are prohibited from having firearms. They continue to obtain guns illegally and often use stolen or untraceable ‘ghost guns’ in violent crimes.”
Underscoring the urgency of the issue, Sheriff Cooper asserted, “We cannot allow this tragic incident to be forgotten overnight. The problem of illegal firearm possession and its use in violent crimes is a real and pressing issue that the Sheriff’s Department is committed to addressing in 2024.”
Breaking news reveals that an arrest has been made in connection with the shooting. The investigation uncovered a sequence of events leading to the untimely death of the 10-year-old boy. Arkete Davis, a 53-year-old adult, has been taken into custody and is facing multiple charges related to firearm possession, child endangerment, and accessory after the fact.

According to the investigation, another 10-year-old juvenile gained access to Davis’ vehicle, where a firearm was discovered. Tragically, the young child unintentionally shot the victim, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
As the community mourns the loss of the 10-year-old boy, Sheriff Cooper called for collective efforts to address firearm safety and responsible gun ownership, especially in households with minors. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for ongoing dialogue and action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
