Pedestrian Killed in Southwest Las Vegas Valley Crash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a pedestrian and the arrest of a 23-year-old man on charges of DUI and hit-and-run. The incident took place in the southwest Las Vegas valley, specifically on Tropicana Avenue west of Cameron Street near Decatur Boulevard.

The authorities were alerted to the incident at approximately 4:30 a.m., following a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Upon reaching the scene, the evidence and crash video revealed that a Ford F-250, traveling westbound on Tropicana Avenue, veered off its designated travel lane and ultimately mounted the sidewalk. The truck collided with a pedestrian, a protective box housing the Las Vegas Valley Water supply, an NV Energy power pole, and a wrought iron fence, causing significant damage and disruption.

Shockingly, the Ford driver quickly reversed back onto the road and fled the scene, heading westbound on Tropicana Avenue. Tragically, the 39-year-old pedestrian lost their life at the scene due to the severity of the impact.

Following extensive investigations, Metro detectives discovered the abandoned Ford in the northeast Las Vegas valley. The alleged driver of the vehicle, identified as 23-year-old Jair Rebollo-Castrejon, was subsequently apprehended at his residence on charges related to DUI and hit-and-run.

This heart-wrenching incident marks the 156th traffic-related fatality within the jurisdiction of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) for the year 2023. The authorities continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in the Las Vegas valley.

Increased Focus on Road Safety

The unfortunate incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety. As communities strive to reduce traffic-related incidents, it is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant, adhere to traffic regulations, and avoid engaging in any form of impaired driving. Pedestrians are also encouraged to exercise caution when navigating roadways, utilising designated pedestrian crossings and sidewalks whenever possible.

Collaborative Efforts to Mitigate Future Tragedies

The LVMPD, in collaboration with local authorities and organisations, continues to implement comprehensive strategies aimed at preventing road accidents and protecting the lives of community members. These efforts include increased police presence, educational campaigns, infrastructure improvements, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. It is hoped that through these combined initiatives, the number of traffic-related fatalities can be significantly reduced.

Residents and visitors are urged to report any suspicious or dangerous driving behaviour to the authorities promptly. By working together, we can create a safer and more secure environment for all road users.
