An Off-Duty Maryland Police Officer Thwarts Carjacking at Large Shopping Mall

An armed, off-duty Maryland police officer successfully defended his family against two suspected carjackers near a prominent shopping mall outside Washington, D.C., according to the police. The incident unfolded when the officer and his family were forced out of their vehicle in a parking lot near the Tanger Outlets National Harbor shopping center in Oxon Hill. The off-duty officer fired his weapon, prompting the suspects to flee, while ensuring the safety of his family.

In a press conference, Prince George Assistant Chief Vernon Hale III urged the public to remain vigilant. He emphasized that the incident serves as a reminder that everyone should stay alert in their surroundings, as carjackings can happen to anyone. The officer’s quick response prevented harm to his family and highlighted the importance of remaining vigilant and looking out for one another.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Thursday in a parking lot that serves various office buildings, including dental and medical offices. The off-duty officer, who remains unidentified, was assisting two family members as they entered their personal vehicle when they were approached by at least two suspects, as reported by Fox 5 DC. The situation escalated into an apparent carjacking, forcing the officer and his family out of the vehicle.

The off-duty officer discharged his weapon, causing the suspects to flee in the vehicle. Fortunately, none of the family members sustained any injuries during the incident, and the police believe that none of the shots fired hit the suspected carjackers. The officer successfully ensured the safety of his family, although the suspects managed to escape with his personal vehicle, according to Assistant Chief Hale.

The off-duty officer utilized his department-issued firearm during the incident, as confirmed by the police later on.

Following the incident, the police issued a “be on the lookout” for a black GMC Acadia. NBC Washington reported that the search for the suspects’ vehicle began immediately after the carjacking.

On Friday, the police managed to locate and apprehend one of the suspects, identified as 19-year-old Anthony Stewart from Washington, D.C. Stewart was found in D.C. and will be extradited to Maryland to face charges of carjacking, robbery, theft, and additional charges, as stated by the police.

The second suspect involved in the carjacking remains at large, and the police are actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the individual.

Carjackings have become a significant concern in Maryland and Washington, D.C., with a surge in incidents this year. Prince George’s County Police reported an 18% increase in carjackings compared to the previous year, with a total of 500 carjackings as of last week, as reported by WJLA.

Washington, D.C., located approximately 11 miles from the site of the carjacking incident, has witnessed a more than 100% increase in carjackings compared to the same period last year. According to recent data, there have been 952 reported carjackings in the city, compared to 475 during the corresponding time frame in 2022.

The rise in carjackings has even affected political leaders and their families. In October, Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar was carjacked by three armed attackers near the U.S. Capitol, highlighting the severity of the crime situation in the city.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is actively investigating the carjacking incident and urging the public to provide any information regarding the identity of the second suspect. The off-duty officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.
