Search Continues for Suspects in Oakland Police Officer’s Killing

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — The search for suspects involved in the tragic killing of Oakland Police Officer Tuan Le continues, more than 24 hours after the incident. Officer Le, a 4-year veteran of the force, was shot and killed while responding to a burglary at a cannabis business in Oakland.

As the community mourns the loss of Officer Le, a growing memorial can be seen inside the Oakland Police Department headquarters. Colleagues and fellow officers paid their respects to the fallen comrade on Friday afternoon.

The tragic incident occurred when Officer Le and his fellow officers were responding to a burglary in progress at a cannabis business located at Embarcadero and Fifth Streets. Sadly, Officer Le was shot during the response. The suspects involved in the incident are still at large.

On Saturday, the scene of the crime showed signs of the devastating event. Several vehicles were found smashed, serving as evidence of the incident. However, no investigators were present at the scene at the time. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement, the Oakland Police Department shared, “The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Officer Le is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.”

Officer Le’s dedication and commitment to his community were widely recognized. Keisha Henderson, a resident of West Oakland, spoke highly of him, stating, “He’s always been a great officer, and he was a gem for our neighborhood and community.” Officer Le served as a community resource officer in Henderson’s neighborhood, where he made residents feel respected and cared for.

Bishop Bob Jackson from Full Acts Gospel Church expressed his condolences to Officer Le’s family, emphasizing the tragic loss experienced by the City of Oakland. Jackson also highlighted the timing of the shooting, which occurred shortly after Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao rejected a list of police chief candidates from the Police Commission.

Mayor Thao issued a statement, pledging to work tirelessly with law enforcement partners to apprehend the individuals responsible for the assault and killing of Officer Le. The community is united in mourning the loss of a dedicated officer who devoted his life to keeping Oakland safe.
