A tragic incident unfolded in Manipur on Saturday as renewed violence erupted, resulting in the death of a volunteer on guard duty, as reported by The Indian Express. The victim, Jamesbond Ningombam, aged 35, was part of a group of village volunteers tasked with protecting a locality in Imphal West. Tragically, Ningombam sustained severe injuries during the exchange of gunfire and succumbed to profuse bleeding. His mortal remains are currently being held at the mortuary in the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal.

The northeastern state of Manipur has been plagued by ethnic violence between the Kukis and the Meiteis since May 3. The ongoing clashes have claimed the lives of over 200 individuals and displaced approximately 60,000 residents. Kadangband, the location of the recent attack, is one of the areas severely affected by the violence and shares a border with the Kuki-Zo-dominated district of Kangpokpi.

In a separate incident, a commando from the Manipur Police sustained injuries during a heavy exchange of fire between security forces and unidentified gunmen on Saturday afternoon. According to PTI, the incident took place in Moreh town, situated in the Tengnoupal district.

The commando was wounded when attackers targeted a police vehicle at Chikim Veng, while en route from Moreh, which lies in proximity to the India-Myanmar border.

Authorities have revealed that the incident occurred during a routine reconnaissance operation conducted by Manipur Police commandos in the area.

“The initial detonation of two bombs was followed by an intense exchange of gunfire, with an estimated 350 to 400 rounds being fired,” shared an unidentified official. “One of our commandos sustained shrapnel injuries during the assault, as they were passing through the M Chahnou village section of the Imphal-Moreh road.”

The injured commando, identified as Ponkhalung from the India Reserve Battalion, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Assam Rifles Camp.
