Winnipeg Police Investigate Hostage Rescue Operation Linked to Homicide Case

The Winnipeg Police Service has revealed that a man who was shot and killed during a hostage rescue operation on December 28 was a person of interest in an ongoing homicide investigation. The incident occurred at a residence located at 25 Furby Street.

Earlier in the month, on December 23, the Winnipeg Police Service received a missing person report concerning a long-distance truck driver from British Columbia who was believed to be in Winnipeg. Investigators from the Missing Persons Unit were able to confirm that the truck driver was indeed in the city.

However, on December 26, the truck driver’s abandoned vehicle was discovered in the West Broadway neighbourhood. Upon further investigation, it was tragically revealed that the driver had been found deceased at an apartment in the 100-block of Furby Street. The victim has since been identified as Farah Mohamud, a 34-year-old male from Delta, B.C., and his family has been notified of the devastating news.

Then, on December 28, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a distress call regarding an armed male holding an adult female hostage inside an apartment at 25 Furby Street. The armed man had barricaded himself and the victim inside a suite. It was later discovered that two other adults and a child were also being held against their will within the same apartment block.

Fortunately, the Tactical Support Team was able to secure the release of the other adult female and the child, while another male managed to escape. These victims were all safely taken into the care of the Tactical Support Team without any harm. However, the initial female victim remained trapped inside the suite with the armed male.

The Tactical Support Team, in collaboration with the Crisis Negotiation Unit, established communication and negotiations with the armed male, as it became clear that the victim’s life was in imminent danger. The armed male adamantly refused to let her leave the premises.

At approximately 5:10 p.m., the Tactical Support Team initiated a rescue plan aimed at safely extracting the female victim from the suite. During the rescue operation, firearms were discharged, resulting in the male suspect being struck and succumbing to his injuries. Thankfully, the victim was unharmed.

Investigators have now determined a connection between the deceased male and the homicide of the Delta truck driver. The deceased male was considered a person of interest in the ongoing investigation into the truck driver’s tragic death.

This incident highlights the dedication and bravery of the Winnipeg Police Service in ensuring the safety of the community. The coordinated efforts of the Tactical Support Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit ultimately led to the successful rescue of the hostages and the neutralization of the armed suspect.

The Winnipeg Police Service will continue its investigations into both the homicide of the Delta truck driver and the hostage rescue operation to bring justice to those affected by these tragic events..
