MORIOKA — The Tohoku Regional Forest Office revealed on October 20th that the fruiting of beech nut crops, a crucial food source for bears, received the worst rating of a “failed harvest” in all five prefectures in northeast Japan, except Fukushima. This decline in available food may have contributed to the increasing number of bear attacks across the region.

SAPPORO — The brown bear known as “OSO18,” responsible for multiple attacks on cattle in Hokkaido towns, was reportedly killed in late July. The Hokkaido Prefectural Government’s brown bear task force confirmed the news on August 22nd. The death of this notorious bear brings relief to the affected communities.
