The sequence of events leading up to the crash began when an observant officer noticed a Dodge Charger weaving back and forth on the road without headlights around 3:15 a.m. The officer swiftly attempted to stop the vehicle, but instead of complying, the driver of the Charger chose to accelerate to speeds exceeding 100 mph.

Approximately 30 seconds later, the Charger violently collided with the back of a sedan, causing a devastating impact that propelled the sedan off the interstate and caused the Charger to flip. Tragically, a 47-year-old passenger seated in the rear of the sedan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as Douglas Alfredo Gonzalez Cerna from Lewisville.

Following the crash, the driver and front seat passenger of the sedan were transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Thankfully, they have since been released, according to Denton police.

The driver of the Charger has been identified as Jonathan Vargas, an 18-year-old individual. After a thorough on-scene investigation, law enforcement officers arrested Vargas and subsequently booked him into the City of Denton Jail.

Due to the crash investigation, certain sections of I-35E near Buc-ee’s Boulevard were temporarily closed for several hours. However, these areas have now been reopened for regular traffic.
