Accident – Death – Obituary News : Newly released footage reveals the chilling moment a Florida honors student, Derek Rosa, confessed to brutally stabbing and killing his mother, Irina Garcia, despite pleading not guilty. The shocking incident occurred on October 12, when Rosa allegedly stabbed his mother over 40 times and slashed her neck. The motive behind this grisly killing remains unknown.

The recently obtained police interrogation video depicts Rosa calmly nodding his head in affirmation when asked by a Hialeah Police Department detective if he killed his mother. In the video, Rosa describes the size and color of the knife he used to commit the heinous crime. He casually mentions using a big-sized kitchen knife with a purple handle. When questioned about whether his mother was sleeping at the time, Rosa confirms that she was.

Furthermore, the footage shows the teenager showing detectives his bloody hands and pointing to his neck when asked where he stabbed his mother. He admits that his mother screamed during the attack. However, when pressed about the reason behind the killing, Rosa requests an attorney after briefly going to the bathroom.

In a pre-trial hearing on December 15, prosecutors played a recording of Rosa speaking to a detective immediately after the stabbing. In the recording, Rosa chillingly admits, “I woke up, I grabbed one of the kitchen knives and I went to her room… I killed her.” Disturbed by the tape, Miami Dade Circuit Judge Richard Hersch ordered Rosa to be held in an adult jail, specifically the Miami-Dade Metro West detention center, until his trial commences.

During a separate hearing, prosecutors presented harrowing babycam footage showing Rosa standing over his sleeping mother just moments before the alleged stabbing. The black and white images, timestamped at 11pm, depict Rosa looming over his mother. He called 911 to report the murder approximately half an hour later. Another haunting photo released by investigators captures Garcia cradling her 14-day-old baby at 10:23pm on the same evening. Authorities believe she was fast asleep when the attack took place.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Garcia’s lifeless body on the floor with numerous knife wounds, including a slashed artery in her neck. The two-week-old baby was found unharmed in her crib nearby.

Rosa is also accused of taking a selfie covered in blood and sending it to a friend after the killing. In the photo, he can be seen sticking his tongue out. After taking the pictures, Rosa allegedly asked a dispatcher if his actions were “bad.” He also claimed to have found two guns owned by his stepfather and contemplated suicide but ultimately did not follow through with the plan.

Family members expressed shock at the alleged murder, describing Rosa as a “good kid” and stating that no one could have imagined such a tragedy. Although Rosa’s attorneys have not argued any mental health issues contributing to their client’s mindset at the time of the killing, prosecutors presented a pink-handled knife covered in blood, believed to have been used in the attack.

Initially held in Miami-Dade’s juvenile detention center for two weeks after his arrest, Rosa was later transferred to Metro West when his charges were upgraded to first-degree murder by a grand jury. After a six-week hearing process, Judge Hersch denied Rosa’s bail and ruled that he would be housed in an adult jail. While acknowledging concerns about Rosa’s living conditions, the judge did not find a clear violation of his constitutional rights.

During the hearing, Hialeah Police officer Joseph Elosegui, who interviewed Rosa after the alleged murder, revealed that investigators found additional evidence by examining Rosa’s internet activity. Elosegui claimed that the 13-year-old had researched the most effective ways to kill someone and whether a small knife could cut through bone. The friend to whom Rosa allegedly sent the selfie was identified as “Sweden,” and he reportedly sent two pictures of his mother as well.

Despite the emotional impact of the recording played in court, Rosa’s attorneys were unsuccessful in their attempts to keep it sealed. They argued that it was unconstitutional to keep Rosa in an adult cell, citing unsustainable conditions and limited access to education. However, the judge rejected these claims, stating that the defense failed to prove any physical or psychological danger to Rosa and that he had ample educational opportunities.

Rosa’s instructors testified that he receives six lessons per week in math, science, social studies, and reading, each lasting between 90 minutes and 2-and-a-half hours. Guards confirmed that he is the only child in Metro West who has a security detail outside his cell at all times, ensuring his safety whenever he leaves..
