Shooting in Trussville area leads to a Birmingham homicide

BIRMINGHAM — A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday when a shooting that originated in the Trussville area near Edwards Lake Road and Gadsden Highway resulted in a homicide in Birmingham, as confirmed by Sgt. LaQuitta Wade of the Birmingham Police Department.

According to Wade, the incident began around 1:31 p.m. when the East Precinct officers received a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert from the 911 Communications Division. The alert reported a male firing shots at another vehicle in the vicinity of Edwards Lake Road and Gadsden Highway. Just minutes later, multiple calls were received indicating a similar situation in the 9300 Block of Parkway East.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a victim who appeared to have sustained injuries from a motor vehicle accident. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services were called to the scene, and the victim was swiftly transported to UAB Hospital. Medical staff at UAB Hospital determined that the victim had actually suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound.

The victim has been identified as Stephen A. Keith Jr., a 77-year-old resident of Birmingham. Tragically, Keith could not survive the gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at 9:44 p.m.

Following the gunshot, Keith’s vehicle collided with a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck also required transportation to UAB Hospital for medical attention, facilitated by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services.

Sgt. Wade confirmed that the victim was intentionally targeted. However, the suspect involved in the shooting is now in police custody, providing some relief to the community.
